Cowboy Basics Camp

Welcome to our new facility at Eaton!  We are located 15 miles east of 1-25 at Fort Collins or just 6 miles north of Greeley on Hwy 85.  Our new home includes an outdoor arena with wonderful footing, set up perfect for working cattle, 2 nice round pens, a nine stall barn, pastures for the cattle and horses and plenty of parking for our guests.  Eaton is where 3 sets of Amy’s great-grandparents homesteaded, in fact both her mom and dad graduated from Eaton High School.  Steve is no stranger to the area either as his dad grew up in Greeley and both his mom and dad graduated from University of Northern Colorado.  So coming back to Eaton was like coming home.  We have a beautiful view of the mountains and are within half hour drives to the Pawnee National Grasslands and trails in the foothills of the mountains.

We are excited to have you join us.  Be prepared to have a ton of fun, work your butt off and be overwhelmed with lots of information. We do take things seriously when we need to but really prefer to keep the learning atmosphere relaxed. The reservation form is included also.  Directions to the ranch can be found from the home page.

The general format of Cowboy Basics Clinics offers horsemanship, pasture (trail) riding, cow working and basic ranch roping. Horsemanship will cover ground work, and all the basics of building a solid foundation in your horse’s education. This will give you hands-on experience to practice the principles needed in the relationship with your horse.

We will spend whatever time it takes with you and your horse to make sure you are comfortable with this foundation!

We then take what we learn in the arena and apply it to situations out on the trail or working cattle or roping.  We will have the opportunity to work cattle a lot and drive out to the grasslands or to the foothills for a trail ride.  We will work cattle in the pasture as well as in the arena. This gives us and our horses a chance to track and move the cattle in the open as well as in the arena by setting up rodears, doing cow sorting, cutting and or working a cow one-on-one in the round pen. The ranch roping is very basic.  You will learn how to coil a rope, build a loop, swing a loop, and throw 4 or 5 basic loops at the roping dummy.  You can then graduate to roping live cattle with breakaway hondos or catching and holding cattle while your partner picks up the heels.  Depending on the participants, we have even done things like bareback riding, hobble breaking and colt starting demos.  We do not have a set agenda, rather let you and your horse set the agenda based on your goals.  We will work from where each individual horse and rider is in their education.  That is one of the reasons we limit the number of participants, leaving plenty of time for the “one on one”.  Each day the hours vary, but plan on between 6 to 8 hours of instruction per day.

We’ll stay at it as long as we need to but don’t want to burn you or your horse out.

Our “amenities” here at the ranch include; a place to keep one horse, a place for you to camp (if you choose), water and portable toilets (sorry, no showers or  hook-ups yet!).   If you are not up for camping, there are plenty of hotels just 20 minutes away in Greeley or Fort Collins.    We are not offering the catered meals like we have done in the past since we are so new to the area and have several restaurants and a grocery store just 5 minutes away.  Grass hay and grain are available upon request for an additional charge (see reservation form) for those that don’t want to haul 4 days worth of hay or grain.  If you are coming from out-of-state, your horse will need a current negative Coggins Test, a current health and a transportation brand.   The brand is necessary for those coming from further than 50 miles away, even in state.  As an extra precaution, be sure your horse is current on vaccinations and deworming.  Your horse will probably experience more work than normal in an unusual environment.  Anything you can do to ease that stress will be great!   We will have a farrier on call in case of lost shoe and are 15 minutes from a wonderful vet clinic.

We look forward to riding with you!   If you have any other questions after looking over this letter and the reservation form, be sure to call or email!
